DESCRIPTION

The A/C compressor may stop operating. Intermittent operation may also occur when directly applying battery voltage during testing. This concern may be caused by a damaged thermal protector.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the thermal protector tested according to the instructions in this bulletin.

NOTE:
Ensure that the following diagnostics are performed prior to compressor replacement.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Check the battery voltage at the thermal protector terminal when the compressor stops working, (with A/C Switch and Blower Fan Switch ON).

^ If voltage is present proceed to step 2.

^ If voltage is not present check the power source from the battery to the thermal protector (Wiring harness, A/C Switch, A/C Relay, sensors) according to the workshop manual or BETM.

NOTE:
Thermal Protector Circuit Usually Closed, Open when refrigerant temperature exceeds 330 degrees F (165 degrees C).

2. Check for battery voltage at the magnetic clutch.

^ If voltage is present, replace the magnetic clutch.

^ If voltage is not present, replace the thermal protector.

NOTE:
Inspect the pressure plate area of the magnetic clutch.

^ If the rubber protrusions are damaged (burnt appearance), rotate the pressure plate (by hand or use a suitable tool). If the pressure plate does not turn, the compressor may have internal damage. Replace the compressor.
