NO SOUND/INTERMITTENT SOUND FROM REAR SPEAKERS
NOTE:
This bulletin supercedes Service Bulletin # 019/92, Cat. T, issued 11/9/92.
AFFECTED VINS
This bulletin applies to 1990-92 Protege models produced through August 31, 1992 and with a VIN of JM1BG22**N0560557 and lower.
This bulletin does not apply to 1990-92 Protege models with a VIN equal to or greater than JM1BG22**N0560558 and produced after August 31, 1992.
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may experience a no sound or intermittent sound operation from the rear speakers. Prior to the production change date, the rear speaker terminals are exposed in the luggage compartment area. The terminals may come into contact with the cargo (especially large, bulky baggages) and may break causing the inoperable condition(s).
After August 31, 1992, the rear speakers have been turned one (1) speaker screw position (or +/- 120~) away from the luggage compartment area. This change "hides" the rear speaker terminals. They are no longer exposed in the luggage compartment area.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
If the above condition occurs, inspect the speaker cord connector and speaker terminals. If the speaker cord connector is broken, replace with a short cord assembly and reposition both speakers as outlined in the procedures below. If the speaker terminal(s) is broken, replace the affected speaker(s).
If the speaker terminal in either one of the speakers is broken, replace the affected speaker as follows:
1. Open the rear trunk and remove the speaker cord connector.
2. From the passenger area, remove the fasteners and the rear package trim.
3. Remove the three (3) screws on each speaker. Figure 1.
4. Remove damaged speaker(s).
5. Install the replacement speaker(s). Reposition the left speaker one (1) screw position (+/- 120~) clockwise. Reposition the right speaker one (1) screw position (+/- 120~) counter-clockwise. Figure 2. The speaker terminals should face away from the luggage compartment area.
If only one (1) speaker needs replacement, be sure to reposition the other speaker.
6. Reinstall the three (3) screws on each speaker.
7. Reinstall the rear package trim and fasteners.
8. Due to the change of speaker position, a short cord has been established as a service part (see Parts Information). Connect the new short cord to the speaker harness and speakers.
9. Secure the new short cord to the harness with tape.
10. Turn on the radio and check speaker operation.
