With Scan Tool

Self-Diagnosis System:

When problems occur in ECU monitored input or output devices, failure code numbers can be retrieved from the ECU with Mazda special service tools (SST) or aftermarket "Scan" tools compatible with Mazda electronic systems. Mazda tools required are System Selector (SST #49 B019 9A0) and Self-Diagnosis Checker (SST #49 H018 9A1).

NOTE: The ECU constantly checks for input device malfunctions. However, it only checks output devices during a three second period after the ignition is switched "ON" and the diagnosis connector "TEN" terminal is grounded. If more than one code number is present, they will be displayed in numerical order, lowest number first.

INSPECTION

Self-Diagnosis Tools:

1. Connect System Selector to diagnosis connector.
2. Set switch A to position "1."
3. Set test switch to "Self Test."
4. Connect Self-Diagnosis Checker to System Selector and a ground.
5. Set select switch to position "A."
6. Turn ignition switch "ON."
7. Verify that digital display flashes "88" and buzzer sounds for 3 seconds after switching ignition "ON."
8. If "88" does not flash, check main (fuel injection) relay, power supply circuit and diagnosis connector wiring.
9. If "88" flashes and buzzer sounds continuously for over 20 seconds, check for a short between ECU terminal 1F and diagnosis connector. Replace ECU if necessary and repeat steps 3-7.
10. Note any code numbers and check for causes.
11. To cancel malfunction code memory after testing and repair, perform after-repair procedure.

AFTER-REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. To cancel malfunction code memory, disconnect negative battery cable and depress brake pedal for at least twenty seconds. Reconnect battery.
2. Connect Mazda tools or equivalent aftermarket "Scan" tools as previously described under INSPECTION.
3. Warm up engine and run at 2000 rpm for three minutes.
4. Verify no codes displayed.
5. If any new codes are retrieved, repeat step 10 of inspection procedure (above). If the same code(s) recurs, recheck repair work and look for what else might cause the code(s).
