Valves & Valve Guides

1. Inspect valve for damaged or bent stem, roughness or damage to face, or damage or uneven wear of stem tip, replacing as necessary.
2. Check valve head margin thickness and compare as follows:
a. Intake valve margin thickness should be 0.054 inch (1.38 mm).
b. Exhaust valve margin should be 0.053 inch (1.35 mm).
3. Measure valve length. Minimum length should be 4.5165 inches (114.72 mm) for intake valves or 4.7299 inches (120.14 mm) for exhaust valves.
4. Measure valve stem diameter. Diameter should be 0.2331 - 0.2356 inch (5.92 - 5.985 mm) for intake valve or 0.2329 - 0.2354 inch (5.915 - 5.980 mm) for exhaust valve.
5. Measure valve guide inner diameter. Diameter should be 0.2367 - 0.2374 inch (6.01 - 6.03 mm) for intake valve and exhaust valves.
6. Measure valve stem to guide clearance, which should be 0.0010 - 0.0023 inch (0.025 - 0.06 mm) for intake valve or 0.0012 - 0.0025 inch (0.030 - 0.065 mm) for exhaust valve. If clearance exceeds 0.0080 inch (0.2 mm), replace valve and/or valve guide.
7. Replace valve guide as follows:
a. Using punch tool No. 49 B012 005, or equivalent, and a hammer, remove valve guide from side of opposite combustion chamber.

b. Assemble special tools as shown in Fig. 26.
c. On 1993 models, ensure depth is 0.716 - 0.740 inch.
d. On 1994-95 models, ensure depth is 0.720 - 0.740 inch.
e. Tap valve guide in from opposite side of combustion chamber until tool contacts cylinder head.
f. Ensure valve guide projection is within specifications.
