Timing Belt Removal and Installation

- Install in the reverse order of removal referring to the Installation Notes below.

Installation Notes:

Timing belt auto-tensioner:

1. Set a flat washer at the bottom of the tensioner body to prevent damage to the body plug.
2. Press in the tensioner rod slowly using a press or vice.

Caution: Pressing the tensioner rod with more than 9,810 N (1,000 kg, 2,200 lb) can damage the tensioner spring.

3. Insert a pin to hold the tensioner rod in the body as shown.

4. Install the collar, then install the auto-tensioner onto the cylinder block.

Tightening torque: 19 - 25 Nm (1.9 - 2.6 m-kg, 14 - 19 ft-lb)

Timing Belt:

Note: Install the crankshaft pulley bolt before timing belt installation.

.1 Align the timing marks as shown.

2. Install the timing belt in the order specified.
(1) Timing belt (crankshaft) pulley
(2) Idler No.1
(3) LH camshaft pulley (EX)
(4) LH camshaft pulley (IN)
(5) Tensioner pulley
(6) RH camshaft pulley (EX)
(7) RH camshaft pulley (IN)

3. Push the belt down and install idler pulley No. 2.

Tightening torque: 38 - 51 Nm (3.8 - 5.3 m-kg, 28 - 38 ft-lb)

4. Verify that the timing mark of each pulley is aligned after installation of idler pulley No.2.

5. Turn the crankshaft twice in the direction of rotation, and realign the timing marks.
6. Verify that all timing marks are correctly aligned. If necessary, repeat Steps 1 - 5.
7. Remove the pin from the auto tensioner.
8. Again turn the crankshaft twice and realign the timing marks.

9. Check the timing belt deflection.

Timing belt deflection:
5 - 7 mm (0.20 - 0.28 in)/98 N (10 kg, 22 lb)

Caution: Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the auto tensioner.

10. If the deflection is not correct, check the timing belt auto tensioner and replace if necessary.

Crankshaft pulley:

Caution: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the pulley, and can be damaged easily.

- Install the crankshaft pulley by using the SST.

Tightening torque: 157 - 166 Nm (16 - 17 m-kg, 116 - 122 ft lb)

Steps After Installation:
1. Fill the radiator and coolant reservoir with the specified amount and type of engine coolant.
2. Perform the necessary engine adjustments.
