Variable Induction System: Description and Operation
Variable Inertia Charging System:
PURPOSE
The Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS) improves the resonance induced inertia charging effect, yielding greater torque and a wider torque band.
LOCATION
Shutter valves in dynamic chamber. Actuator on front side of dynamic chamber. Solenoid valve beneath right end of dynamic chamber.
OPERATION
The solenoid gets battery power from the main relay when the ignition is ON, and is energized when the PCME completes the circuit to ground. When OFF, the VICS actuator is vented to the atmosphere. When energized, the vent closes and vacuum is applied to the shutter valve actuator, opening the shutter valves. The PCME closes the shutter valve by stopping electric current to the solenoid valve. The shutter valve actuator switches to air release position under these conditions:
^ Five seconds after engine start
^ When the throttle is opened in D range with engine speed of 1100 - 4800 rpm
