Air Bag Systems: Testing and Inspection



Troubleshooting Procedure

Flowchart:





- The air bag diagnostic module contains a self-diagnosis function.
- This self-diagnosis function flashes or illuminates the AIR BAG warning lamp in the instrument cluster to indicate trouble in the air bag system.
- The malfunctioning system can be determined by the warning lamp illumination or flashing pattern.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON. Verify the air bag system warning lamp operation.
2. Check the connection of the air bag module connector.

Note:
- If a malfunction occurs in the air bag system and the warning lamp is burnt, the warning buzzer in the diagnostic module sounds five cycles of five times each. In this case, check and repair the air bag warning lamp. After repair the system or replacing the bulb, the malfunctioning system can be determined by the warning lamp illumination or flashing pattern.
- If more than one trouble exists in the air bag system, the warning lamp indicates the cause of the trouble with the highest priority.

Note: The air bag module and horn switch are connected to the clock spring connector assembly by a double lock type connector.





3. While turning the steering wheel, press the horn switch and verify that the horn sounds at any position. If the horn sounds, the connection of the air bag module is normal.
4. If the horn does not sound, remove the air bag module. Check continuity of the air bag module connector and horn switch connector.





5. If connection of the connector is not good, reconnect it. Check if the horn sounds.
6. If the horn does not sound and the connectors are OK, replace the contact plate.
