2-4 Brake Band

SST:

Preparation

Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly
1. Disassemble in the order shown in the figure.
2. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
3. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.

Inspection

Servo return spring
1. Measure the return spring free length and check for deformation.

Free length: 43.25 mm (1.703 in)

2. If not within specification, replace the return spring.

2-4 brake band

NOTE: Use a piece of wire to secure the 2-4 brake band so that it is not damaged by being stretched.

Check the 2-4 brake band for wear and burning.

Orifice check spring

NOTE: Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.

1. Measure the spring free length.

Specification:

2. If not as specified, replace the spring.

Assembly procedure

CAUTION: Install the spring exactly in the direction shown.

1. Install the orifice valve, orifice check spring, and orifice holder as shown.

2. Install the orifice assembly and washer to the transaxle case.
3. Tighten the orifice assembly by using a hexagonal wrench.

Tightening torque: 40 - 53 N.m (4.0 - 5.5 kg.m, 29 - 39 ft.lb)

NOTE:
- D-ring inner diameter
Piston stem side: 58.5 mm (2.303 in)
Servo retainer side:
B6 SOHC 29.4 mm (1.157 in)
K8 DOHC 25.5 mm (1.004 in)

4. Apply ATF to new D-rings and install them to the servo piston.

5. Insert the piston stem into the servo piston and secure it with a new spring clip.

NOTE: O-ring inner diameter: 65.7 mm (2.587 in)

6. Apply ATF to the new O-ring and install it to the servo retainer.

7. Assemble the servo piston and servo retainer.
8. Install the snap ring.

Adjustment Without SST
1. Mark the piston stem as shown at the point it exits the transaxle case.

NOTE: Measure several times and calculate the average value.

2. Apply compressed air through the fluid passage with a rubber-tipped air nozzle as shown and measure the piston stem stroke.

Air pressure: 392 kPa (4.0 kg/sq.cm, 57 psi) max.
Stroke: 1.0 - 1.7 mm (0.039 - 0.0669 in)

3. If not within specification adjust it by selecting the proper piston stem from below.

Adjustment with SST

CAUTION: Do not deform the snap ring when removing it.

1. Remove the snap ring and remove the 2-4 band servo assembly.
2. Install the servo piston to the SST.
3. Apply ATF to the O-ring removed from the servo retainer.
4. Install the O-ring to the SST.

5. Install the band servo assembly and SST into the transaxle case and secure it with the snap ring.
6. Set a dial indicator against the piston stem.

Piston Stem Lenght:

8. If not within specification, adjust it by selecting the proper piston stem from below.

9. Remove the band servo assembly and remove the SST. Reinstall the servo retainer.
10. Replace the O-rings with new ones.
11. Install the band servo assembly into the transaxle case and secure it with the snap ring.

On-vehicle Inspection/Adjustment

CAUTION:
- Clean the transaxle exterior thoroughly with a steam cleaner or cleaning solvents.
- Wear eye protection when using compressed air to clean components.

1. Support the engine by using the SST.
2. Jack up the vehicle and support it with safety stands.
3. Drain the ATF into a container.
4. Remove the engine mounting member.

CAUTION:
- Do not reuse the gasket.
- Prevent entry of dust, etc. into the control valve body.

5. Remove the oil pan, gasket, and control valve body.

CAUTION: Do not deform the snap ring when removing it.

6. Remove the snap ring and remove the band servo assembly.
7. Install the servo piston to the SST.
8. Apply ATF to the O-ring removed from the servo retainer and install it onto the SST.

9. Install the band servo assembly and SST into the transaxle case and secure it with the snap ring.
10. Set a dial indicator against the piston stem.

11. Apply compressed air through the fluid passage with a rubber-tipped air nozzle as shown and measure the piston stem stroke.

Air pressure: 392 kPa (4.0 kg/sq.cm, 57 psi) max.
Stroke: 1.0 - 1.7 mm (0.0394 - 0.0669 in)

Piston Stem Lenght:

12. If not within specification, select the proper piston stem.

CAUTION: Do not deform the snap ring when removing it.

13. Remove the band servo assembly and remove the SST. Reinstall the servo retainer.
14. Replace the O-rings with new ones.
15. Install the band servo assembly into the transaxle case and secure it with the snap ring.
16. Install the control valve body and oil pan.

17. Loosely install nuts A of the engine mounting member.
18. Install the engine mounting member.

Tightening torque
Nut (A) : 38 - 51 N.m (3.8 - 5.3 kg.m, 28 - 38 ft.lb)
