SST:




Preparation

Preinspection
Before disassembly, measure the backlash of the side gears.
If not within specification, replace the differential assembly.




Backlash
Standard: 0.025 - 0.1 mm (0.001 - 0.004 in)
Maximum: 0.5 mm (0.020 in)




Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly

CAUTION: Do not remove the bearing race unless necessary.

1. Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
2. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
3. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.
4. Measure the backlash after assembly, referring to Backlash of side gear and pinion gear.

Roll pin

NOTE:
- Use protective plates in the vise to prevent damage to the differential.
- Insert the punch into the roll pin hole from the ring gear side.

Place the gear case in a vise and drive the pin out by using a suitable pin punch (2.0 mm (0.079 in) dia.) and hammer.

Bearing




1. Remove the bearing (side opposite ring gear) from the gear case by using the SST.




2. Remove the bearing (ring gear side) by using a combination of parts from the SST.

Assembly Procedure




1. Set the speedometer drive gear onto the ring gear and gear case assembly.

CAUTION: Do not reuse the bearings after they have been removed.

2. Install a new bearing.
1. Press the new bearing (side opposite ring gear) onto the ring gear and gear case assembly by using the SST.




2. Press on the other new bearing (ring gear side) in the same manner.




3. Set the pinion gear and thrust washer into the gear case.




4. Insert the pinion shaft.




5. Install the roil pin, and stake it to prevent it from coming out of the gear case.




6. Apply ATF to the thrust washers.
7. Install the thrust washers and side gears into the gear case. Turn the side gears and align them with the drive shaft holes.




8. Measure the backlash of the side gears as follows:
1. Install the left and right drive shafts in the differential assembly.
2. Support the drive shafts on V-blocks.
3. Measure the backlash of both side gears.

Backlash
Standard: 0.025 - 0.1 mm (0.001 - 0.004 in)
Maximum: 0.5 mm (0.020 in)

9. If the backlash is not within specification, replace the differential assembly.
