Idler Gear

SST:

Preparation

Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly
1. Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
2. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
3. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.

Disassembly Note Locknut

NOTE: Use protective plates in the vise to prevent damage to the SST.

1. Secure the SST and the idler gear assembly in a vise.
2. Remove the locknut.

Bearing race
Remove the bearing race from the idler gear with the SST.

Assembly Procedure

1. Press the new bearing races in with the SST.

2. Install a new bearing onto the idler gear shaft, and install the idler gear, spacer, and bearing assembly.

NOTE: Use protective plates in the vise to prevent damage to the SST.

3. Secure the SST and the idler gear shaft assembly in a vise.
4. Install the locknut.

Tightening torque: 128 - 176 N.m (13 - 18 kg.m, 95 - 130 ft.lb)

NOTE: O-ring inner diameter: 40.5 mm (1.594 in)

5. Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it to the idler gear shaft.

NOTE:
- Use protective plates in the vise to prevent damage to the idler gear.
- Read the preload when the idler shaft starts to turn.

6. Secure the idler gear in a vise.

NOTE: Measure several times and calculate the average value.

7. Measure the bearing preload by using the SST.

Pull scale reading: 0.3 - 8 N (0.03 - 0.9 kg, 0.07 - 1.9 lb)
Preload: 0.03 - 0.8 N.m (0.3 - 9.0 kg.cm, 0.27 - 7.8 in.lb)

NOTE: Preload is reduced by increasing the thickness of the spacer or increased by reducing the thickness.

8. If the specified preload cannot be obtained within the specified tightening torque, adjust it by selecting the proper spacer.
