Ignition Timing

1. Warm engine to operating temperature. Check engine condition (spark plugs, leaks in hoses, etc.).
2. Turn all electrical loads OFF.

3. Connect Mazda SST #49 B019 9A0 to diagnosis connector.

NOTE: If SST is not used, jump across TEN and GND terminals of diagnostic connector.

CAUTION: Be extremely careful when making connections to diagnosis connector. Improper connection will cause a malfunction. If power connector terminal is grounded (Blue: 1-pin), wiper 20A fuse will blow.

4. Connect timing light. (If you experience any timing light operation problems, Refer to TSB# G00190, 1990).

5. Connect tachometer to diagnosis connector IG- terminal.

NOTE: When using an externally powered tachometer and/or timing light, connect to power connector (blue: 1-pin).

6. Set SST switch "A" to position 1.
7. Set TEST SW to SELF-TEST.
8. Apply parking brake.
9. Check that idle speed is 850 ± 50 rpm.

10. Check if timing mark (yellow) on crankshaft pulley and mark on timing belt cover are aligned at 10 ± 1° BTDC.

11. If marks are not aligned, loosen crank angle sensor lock bolt and turn sensor to adjust.
12. Tighten lock bolt to 14 - 19 ft lb (19 - 25 Nm).
13. After adjustment, disconnect SST or remove jumper wire.
