Removal
1. Deactivate audio anti-theft function, as outlined under Technician Safety Information, before disconnecting battery.2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine coolant and transaxle oil.
4. Remove hood, then raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove front wheels and splash shield, then fresh air duct and air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove battery and carrier, then accelerator cables and radiator hoses.
7. On models with automatic transaxle, remove oil cooler hoses.
8. Remove coolant reservoir hose, then disconnect coolant and condenser fan motor connectors.
9. Remove radiator bracket, then the radiator and coolant fan assembly.
10. Remove drive belts.
11. Remove power steering oil reservoir mounting bolts and secure reservoir away from engine.
12. Remove power steering pump pulley and pump mounting bolts, then support pump away from engine.
13. On models with A/C, remove compressor with hoses connected and support away from engine.
14. On all models, disconnect cruise control actuator cable and remove actuator.
15 On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect control cable.
16. Disconnect harness connectors, Fig. 1.

17. Place rags under fuel hoses, then disconnect, plug and remove fuel hoses.
18. Remove heater, brake and purge vacuum hoses.
19. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch release cylinder clips and bolts, then remove cylinder with hose connected and position away from transaxle. Do not bend pipe.
20. Remove transverse member and exhaust pipe.
21. On models with manual transaxle, remove shift control rod and extension bar.
22. Remove stabilizer control link.
23. Remove tie rod end ball joint cotter pin and loosen nut until flush with ball joint stud end.
24. Separate knuckle arm and ball joint using special ball joint puller tool No. 490118850C, or equivalent.
25. Remove lower arm ball joint bolts and nuts, then pry lower arm down and separate from knuckles. Be careful not to damage ball joint dust boots and oil seals.
26. Insert pry bar between lefthand driveshaft and case, then separate shaft from transaxle.
27. Insert pry bar between righthand driveshaft and joint shaft, then tap bar and uncouple shafts.
28. Remove joint mounting bolts and joint shaft.
29. Remove fuse box.
30. Remove lefthand engine mount stay bracket and righthand engine mount rubber, then lefthand engine mount bolts, and rear engine mount rubber and bracket.
31. Suspend engine with chain block, then remove front engine mount nuts.
32. Remove rear engine mount rubber bolts and engine mount member bolts and nuts, then remove rear engine mount rubber and engine mount member.
33. Slowly lift engine and transaxle assembly. Keep assembly from swinging or bumping into compartment components and remove.
34. Remove starter, front engine mount and bracket, then the transaxle.
