Drum Brakes

REMOVAL

Fig. 2 Exploded View Of Rear Axle Hub & Bearing Assembly:





1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
2. Check wheel bearing endplay as follows:
a. Position dial indicator against hub cap as shown in Fig. 1.
b. Push and pull brake drum by hand in axial direction and measure endplay.
c. If endplay exceeds .0079 inch (2mm), replace wheel bearing.

Brake Pipe





Disconnect the brake pipe with the SST.





Rear Wheel Bearing





Remove the rear wheel bearing with the SST

INSPECTION

Knuckle Spindle






1. Cracks or damage.
2. Wear or rust on the oil seal contact surface.

Brake Drum





Wear or damage to brake drum.

Note: Remove minor rust with sandpaper

ASSEMBLY





1. Install a new rear wheel bearing with the SST.

INSTALLATION









Brake Pipe





1. Connect the brake pipe with the SST.

Tightening torque: 13-22 Nm (1.3-2.2 m-kg, 9.4-16 ft-lb)

2. Bleed the air.

End play:
Measure the end play.

2. Install the retaining ring.
3. Install a new oil seal with the SST.

Note: Apply grease to the oil seal lip.

Caution: Loosely tighten the knuckle and the lateral links when installing. Lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts and bolts to the specified torque with the vehicle unladen.

After installation, adjust the parking brake lever stroke. Inspect rear wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
