Evaporative Emissions System: Description and Operation
Evaporative Emission Control System:
PURPOSE
Prevent evaporative fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere. System consists of a fuel vapor valve, two-way check valve, charcoal canister, purge control solenoid valve, PCME, and input devices.
LOCATION
^ Charcoal canister: left rear corner engine compartment
^ Fuel vapor valve: top of fuel tank
^ Two-way check valve: in vapor line above fuel tank.
^ Purge control solenoid: right center firewall.
OPERATION
The quantity of evaporative vapors introduced into the engine intake system varies according to operating conditions and is PCME controlled via the solenoid valve. Purging is done under these conditions:
^ After warm-up.
^ Driving in gear.
^ Accelerator pedal depressed (idle switch OFF).
^ Heated oxygen sensor operating normally.
