Steering Angle Transfer Shaft
1. Raise and support vehicle and remove steering angle transfer shaft in numerical order, Fig. 6, being careful not to bend joints to extreme angles.
2. Check shaft for cracked, damaged or deteriorated boots, stuck carrier bearing, bending or damaged mounting brackets, replacing shaft assembly as necessary.
3. Check universal joint for looseness or damage and the rear boot for cracks, damage or deterioration, replacing shaft assembly as necessary.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following. Installation of steering angle transfer shaft must be done correctly. Work carefully, referring to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES/STEERING ANGLE TRANSFER SHAFT. If not installed correctly, the rear steering angle may be incorrect, causing steering problems or damage to the rear steering gear assembly.
a. Temporarily install front bracket, then install rear bracket, torquing front and rear bracket bolts to 5-7 ft. lbs.
b. Connect joint of front steering gear side and tighten bolt, then connect joint of rear steering gear side and tighten bolt. The shaft should be installed by two or more persons, being careful not to bend joint part. Ensure front and rear brackets do not contact oil seal.
c. Attach new wire and clamp, ensuring protrusion does not exceed .2 inch (5mm), then install cover.
5. After completion of installation, adjust steering angle transfer shaft.
