KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH
AFFECTED VINS
This bulletin applies to all 1993 MX-6/626 A/T models produced through May 10, 1992 and have a VIN of 1YVGE****P5112095 and lower.
This bulletin does not apply to 1993 MX-6/626 models with a VIN equal to or greater than 1YVGE****P5112096 and produced after May 10, 1992.
DESCRIPTION
On some A/T vehicles, the key cannot be returned to the "lock" position. As a result, the key cannot be removed from the ignition switch. This is caused by the shift/key interlock cable sticking/binding just above the cable clip.
INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the steering column cover as described in Section N of the applicable Workshop Manual.
2. Located behind the steering wheel, on the right side of the steering shaft is the shift/key interlock cable and clip. Figure 1. Using a 10 mm socket, loosen the bolt that secures the shift interlock cable clip. Complete removal of the bolt is not necessary.
3. Straighten the cable by turning the clip parallel to the steering shaft.
4. Retighten the bolt, making sure the clip and cable remain parallel to the steering shaft.
5. Check that the key can be easily removed from the ignition switch.
6. If the key still cannot be removed, replace the shift/key interlock cable with a modified part - GA2C 46 300F. Vehicles are equipped with the modified cable starting with the May 11, 1992 production date. Removal and installation procedures are outlined in Section N of the applicable Workshop Manual.
7. Reinstall steering column cover.
