MIL ON, Flashing DTCs 17, 24

Bulletin No.: 003/94
Issued: 3/10/94
Revised:

Category
F

Applicable Model/s
1993 626/MX-6 V6 Not Appl. to 1994

Subject:
ENGINE LIGHT ON; CODES 17 & 24

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
1993 626, MX-6 vehicles with V6 Engine

DESCRIPTION
If you encounter a customer complaint of the engine light flashing during warm-up (first start of the day), and code 17, 24 or both are retrieved from vehicle, it may be caused by operating parameters within the powertrain control module. To correct this concern, an analog control kit has been released.

NOTE BEFORE INSTALLING THIS KIT:
Only under very unique circumstances will this concern be present, so reproducing this concern will be difficult (since vehicle must be cold soaked, etc.). If you feel difficult to reproduce these codes during normal driving, and there is no driveability concern present, then the powertrain control module is suspect and not the oxygen sensors themselves. Please install kit per this service bulletin. However, if there is a driveability concern, the oxygen sensors are suspect. Please follow the troubleshooting guide in section F2 of the workshop manual.

AFTER INSTALLING THIS KIT:
You may find code 17, 24 or both stored in the power train control module again without the engine malfunction indicator light on during usage after installing the kit. In this case you can disregard the codes stored (you don't need any repair). However, if the light has illuminated during usage after installing the kit, check the connection of the wiring harness of the kit and diagnose the system in accordance with the troubleshooting guide in section F2 of the workshop manual.

MASS PRODUCTION CHANGE
The powertrain control module for the 1994 model year has redefined operating parameters established for warmup.

REPAIR PROCEDURES
See this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect negative battery cable (erase codes 17 & 24).
2. Remove the front console and both side console walls per workshop manual p. S-90 and S-91.

3. Mount the new analog control unit to the inner side of the left console wall with vinyl tape and commercially available foam padding to prevent squeaks and rattles (place padding on both sides of the analog unit) see FIG. 1 (Location is very important to install)
4. Disconnect three yellow powertrain control wiring connectors (B3-01, B3-02 and B3-03).
5. Remove the black tape from wiring harness as needed.
6. Connect the kit harness (6wires) as follows: (refer to the 1993 626/MX-6 wiring diagram manual pg.80-98, diagram # B-3a, B-3b, B-3d, B-3e for proper wiring color codes on the B3-01, B3-02, B3-03 powertrain control module connectors).

6-1 (series connection)
a) Locate the powertrain module wire (Blue) at terminal 1E of the B3-01 connector.
b) Cut this wire approximately 70 mm away from the 1E terminal.
c) Connect control unit wire (Blue/Yellow) to the main harness side of the cut wire (Blue) with a scotchlock.
d) Connect the control unit wire (Blue) to the B3-01 connector side of the cut wire (Blue) with a scotchlock.
NOTE:
Stagger positioning of the scotchlocks to prevent interference with each other and also to prevent unnecessary rattles.

6-2 (parallel connection)
a) Locate the powertrain module wire (black) at terminal 3B of the B3-03 connector.
b) Connect the control unit wire (Black) to the module wire (Black) with a scotchlock.

6-3 (parallel connection)
a) Locate the powertrain module (Red/Black) wire at terminal 1B of the B3-01 connector.
b) Connect the control unit wire (Red/Black) to the module wire (Red/Black) with a scotchlock.

6-4 (parallel connection)
a) Locate the powertrain module wire (Red/White) at terminal 1I of the B3-01 connector.
b) Connect the control unit wire (Red/White) to the module wire (Red/White) with a scotch lock.

6-5 (parallel connection)
a) Locate the power train module wire (Blue/White) at terminal 20 of the B3-02 connector.
b) Connect the control unit wire (Blue/White) to the module wire(Blue/White) with a scotchlock.

7. Install both side console walls per WSM pg. S-91.
8. Route the control unit connector wiring to prevent interference to/from other components. Tape or tie-wrap wiring accordingly
9. Connect the control unit connector to the control unit and reconnect all powertrain module connectors.
10. Install front console per WSM pg. 90.
11. Connect negative battery cable.
12. Confirm absence of squeaks and rattles in the center console area during normal driving.
