Subject:
HARD START WITH COLD ENGINE ILLUMINATING MIL LIGHT IN COLD TEMP.

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

1992 - 93 MX-3 vehicles with K8 engines
626 / MX-6 vehicles with KL engines

DESCRIPTION

If the following occurs when the ambient temperature is approximately -4 degrees (F) (-20 degrees C), repair according to the following procedure.

^ Engine cranks but will not start or is hard to start

^ After starting, the MIL (oxygen sensor) light illuminates

Customers complaining of these problems should have the vehicle diagnosed according to the procedures listed in this bulletin.

PROCEDURE - ENGINE WILL NOT START OR HARD TO START

1. Crank engine without depressing the accelerator pedal.

2. If the engine does not start after ten (10) seconds, stop cranking the engine. Wait ten (10) seconds and crank again. Repeat this process until the engine starts.

NOTE:
When the engine starts, keep starter engaged until the engine speed reaches 750 rpm.

Service Advisors should inform customers that short cranking periods will contribute to hard starting. A long cranking period may be necessary during cold temperatures. Recommend that the customer use 5W-30 oil during the winter months.

REPAIR PROCEDURE - A

1. For 626 / MX-6 Vehicles - Install the timer kit according to the instructions in Service Bulletin, Category F, No. 003/94.

2. For MX-3 Vehicles - Install the timer kit according to the instructions under MX-3 Timer Installation in this bulletin.

NOTE:
DO NOT install a timer kit if the MIL is illuminated and oxygen sensor is malfunctioning.

REPAIR PROCEDURE - B

If long cranking is required to start the engine, the oxygen sensor may become soaked with fuel. The procedures below should bum off the excess fuel.

1. If the engine is cold (MIL is off), run engine at 4000 rpm for 10 seconds.

2. If the MIL is On when the engine starts, run engine at 4000 rpm for 5 seconds.

NOTE:
Stop the engine if the coolant temperature gauge exceeds the normal range.

MX-3 TIMER INSTALLATION

1. Write down all preset radio stations.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. Remove the trim that covers the engine ECU.

4. Remove the connector at the ECU and tape from the ECU harness.

5. Connect the timer kit terminals as described below:

^ Cut the GY/R wire at the 1E terminal of the ECU approximately 70 mm from the connector.

^ Connect terminal "A" (L/Y wire) of the timer to the vehicle harness side of the GY/R wire.

^ Connect the "J" terminal (L wire) of the timer to the ECU side of the GY/R wire.

^ Connect the "B" terminal (B wire) of the timer to the 3B terminal (B/G wire) of the ECU.

^ Connect the "F" terminal (R/B wire) of the timer to the 1B terminal (W/R wire) of the ECU.

^ Connect the "G" terminal (R/W wire) of the timer to the 1I terminal (LG/O wire) of the ECU.

^ Connect the I terminal (L/W wire) of the timer to the 20 terminal (G/O wire) of the ECU.

NOTE:
Do not tangle wires or harness. Use shrink tube or quality electric tape when splicing wires together.

6. Connect the timer and ECU connectors.

7. Attach the timer to the ECU with double sided tape.

8. Wrap the harness securely to avoid interference with surrounding parts.

9. Install trim cover

10. Connect the negative battery terminal and reset radio stations and clock.
