DOOR KEY CYLINDER DOES NOT ILLUMINATE AND/OR CPU FAILURE

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

All 1993 626/MX-6 vehicles
1994 626/MX-6 vehicles with a VIN of 1YVGE****R5168860 and lower

DESCRIPTION




Some vehicles door key cylinder light and/or ignition switch light may not illuminate when the door handle is activated. This may be caused by a faulty harness or the CPU (located behind the main fuse box). Refer to Fig. 1.
The door switch harness has been changed to eliminate this problem.

Customers complaining of this condition should have the vehicle inspected and repaired according to the instructions in this bulletin.

WARNING:
IF THE CPU IS CHANGED FOR ANY REASON (i.e. alarm system malfunction, rear defroster not working, etc.) THE DOOR SWITCH HARNESS MUST ALSO BE CHANGED. FAILURE TO CHANGE ThE HARNESS MAY LEAD TO ADDITIONAL CPU FAILURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify the complaint
2. Check the operation of the ignition switch illumination.

^ If the ignition switch light illuminates, the problem is isolated to the door switch harness and only the harness requires replacement. Proceed to step 3.

^ If the ignition switch light does not illuminate, and the vehicle is within the above VIN range, disconnect the battery and replace the CPU (to prevent reoccurrance) before proceeding to step 3.

NOTE:
Prior to disconnecting battery, record preset audio stations.

3. Remove the door trim according to the instructions in section S of the workshop manual.
4. Carefully pull back the water-proof panel enough to access the inside of the outer door handle.




5. Remove the linkage from the door lock cylinder.




6. Remove the lock cylinder clip and lock cylinder from the door handle




7. Remove the screw from the back of the micro-switch and wire harness retainer.
8. Remove the bulb from the recessed area in the door handle lock cylinder mounting hole.

NOTE:
Do not attempt to remove the bulb without removing the lock cylinder, wire harness damage will result.

9. Remove the harness, micro-switch, harness and bulb as an assembly.
10. Install a new assembly. Route the harness exactly where the original harness was removed. This will prevent interference with door lock linkage.
11. Install door lock cylinder clip.
12. Install door lock cylinder linkage.
13. If applicable, connect battery and reset dock and audio stations.
14. Verify repair.
15. Install waterproof panel and door trim.
