Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Throttle Sensor Adjustment:

PURPOSE
Provide ECU with throttle valve opening angle signal. Used in calculations for fuel injection quantity and timing, ignition timing, turbo control, secondary air injection and purge control, and A/T control.

LOCATION
Side of throttle body.

OPERATION
The sensor is a dual potentiometer rotated by the throttle shaft as it opens and closes. Varying potentiometer resistance alters reference voltage supplied by the ECU, allowing it to read throttle valve opening angle. Sections of sensor are referred to as "narrow range" and "full range."
