Air Injection Control Valve: Testing and Inspection

SWITCHING VALVE SYSTEM OPERATION

Switching Valve Operation:

1. Connect Mazda SST (Engine Signal Monitor Adapter Harness), or equivalent test equipment.
2. Start engine and run at idle.
3. Short ECU terminal 4N and verify that engine idle becomes rough.
4. If idle condition does not change, check the following:

a. Hoses and components for vacuum leaks.
b. Solenoid valve (Switching).
c. Air relief valve.
d. Air pump.
e. Air pump relay.

SWITCHING VALVE INSPECTION

Switching And Relief Valve Inspection:

1. Remove air control valve.
2. Connect vacuum pump to port A. Verify that switching valve opens at vacuum of 4.3 inHg (110 mmHg, 14.7 kPa).

CAUTION: Do not apply vacuum greater than 19.7 inHg (500 mmHg, 66.7 kPa).

3. If not as specified, replace air control valve.

AIR RELIEF VALVE SYSTEM OPERATION

Air Relief Valve Operation:

1. Connect Mazda SST (Engine Signal Monitor and Adapter Harness), or equivalent test equipment.
2. Start engine and run at idle.
3. Verify that air does not flow from air relief valve.
4. Short ECU terminal 3P and verify air flow from air relief valve.
5. If air does not flow, check the following:

a. Hoses and components for vacuum leaks.
b. Solenoid valve (Relief 1).
c. Air pump.
d. Air pump relay.

AIR RELIEF VALVE INSPECTION

Switching And Relief Valve Inspection:

1. Remove air control valve.
2. Connect vacuum pump to port A. Verify that air relief valve opens at vacuum of 5.7 inHg (145 mmHg, 19.3 kPa).

CAUTION: Do not apply vacuum greater than 19.7 inHg (500 mmHg, 66.7 kPa).

3. If not as specified, replace air control valve.
