Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair

SERVICE PRECAUTION

1. Before Component Replacement

Obtain the code number and deactivate the audio anti-theft function before disconnecting the battery.
Before replacement of any air bag system component or before disconnecting any connector of the system, first disconnect the negative battery cable; then disconnect the clock spring connectors (orange and blue).

2. Prohibitation of Component Disassembly

The components of the air bag system are not intended to be disassembled for service.
If a component malfunction is detected by the diagnostic module, replace the suspected component after checking, and if necessary replacing the connections and the wiring harness.
Do not disassemble any component.

3. Prohibitation of Wiring Harness Repair

If a problem (open, short, etc.) is found in the system wiring, replace the wire harness. Do not try to repair it.
An incorrect repair could render the air bag system unsafe or inoperative.

4. When Using Test Lead

When using a test lead for testing, use a tine needle to prevent damage to the terminal.

5. Disconnecting Double Lock Type Connector

The connectors of the air bag system are a double lock type.

These connectors are disconnected as below.

1) Press the orange knob and disconnect the orange connector.
2) Press the blue knob and disconnect the blue connector.
3) Connect the connectors in the reverse order of disconnecting.

6. Shorting Bars in the Air Bag System

When a connector in the air bag module circuit is disconnected, the air bag can accidentally deploy due to static electricity. To prevent this from happening, a shorting bar is installed across the 2-pin connectors of the air bag module and clock spring assembly.

NOTE:

Disconnecting the 2-pole connector of the air bag module and clock spring will cause a short in the two terminals of the connector.
When reconnecting the connector, insert pin B into part A to sever the connection between the two terminals.

CAUTION:

MAKE SURE PIN B IS NOT BROKEN. IF IT IS, REPLACE THE COMBINATION SWITCH OR HARNESS.
DO NOT USE A RESISTOR TO INSPECT THE RX-7 AIR BAG CIRCUIT.

7. After System Service

After servicing the air bag system, verify system operation by checking it with the air bag system warning lamp. If the system is operating normally, the warning lamp will come on when the ignition switch is turned ON, then go off after approximately 6 seconds.
Check if the horn sounds. If the horn does not sound, remove the air bag module and check the connections of the air bag module and horn switch connectors.

DIAGNOSTIC MODULE

Removal/Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the driver-side undercover and the lower panel and connect the clock spring connector.

3. Remove in the order shown in the figure.

4. Install in the reverse order of removal, referring to

Installation note.

After servicing the air bag system, verify system operation by checking with the air bag system warning lamp. If the system is operating normally, the warning lamp will come on when the ignition switch is turned ON, then go oft after approximately six seconds.

If the warning lamp remains ON or OFF, or continues flashing, it indicates a problem in the air bag system. Check the system again, referring to the troubleshooting guide.
