Transaxle Replace
Refer to Fig. 9 when replacing the transaxle.1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Drain transaxle fluid into suitable container, then remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
3. Remove splash shield, then the air hose and resonance chamber.
4. Remove battery and battery carrier.
5. Disconnect speedometer cable, then remove speedometer cable clips and washer.
6. Disconnect inhibitor switch and solenoid valve electrical connectors, then the throttle cable.
7. Remove starter, then the engine mount member. Suspend engine with suitable engine support before removing member.
8. Remove front exhaust pipe, then the oil pan.
9. Remove engine mount No. 2.
10. Remove tie rod from front knuckle using ball joint puller tool No. 49 0118 850C, or equivalent, noting the following:
a. Do not damage dust seal.
b. Temporarily install locknut to prevent thread damage.
c. Do not reuse cotter pin.
11. Remove stabilizer.
12. Remove driveshaft as follows:
a. Remove clinch bolts from lower arm ball joints, then pull lower arms downward to separate from knuckles.
b. Separate left driveshaft from transaxle by prying with suitable bar inserted between shaft and transaxle case. Do not damage oil seal.
c. Slide differential side gear holder tool No. 59 G030 455, or equivalent, into differential side gear.
13. Remove oil cooler inlet and outlet hoses.
14. Lean engine toward transaxle by loosening engine support tool.
15. Support transaxle with suitable jack.
16. Remove transaxle bolts, then the transaxle.
17. Reverse procedure to install. Torque engine mounting member A bolts to 27 - 38 ft.lb., then torque B bolts to 47 - 66 ft.lb., Fig. 8.
