With Manual Transaxle (MTX)
Timing Adjustment:
PREPARATION
1. Warm engine to operating temperature.
2. Turn all electrical loads OFF.
^ Headlights
^ Blower
^ Rear window defroster
^ Power steering
3. Connect Mazda SST (49 B019 9A0) to data link connector. Set switch A to position 1.
U-01 Data Link Connector (F):
NOTE: If SST is not used, connect jumper wire between terminals TEN and GND of data link connector.
4. Connect timing light. Connect tachometer to data link connector terminal IG-.
5. Wait until radiator fan is stopped.
ADJUSTMENT
1. Check for idle speed of 700 ± 50 rpm; adjust if needed.
2. On SST, set test switch to SELF TEST.
3. Check if timing mark (yellow) on crank pulley aligns with mark on timing belt cover; 12° ± 1° BTDC
4. If marks are not aligned, loosen lock bolts and turn distributor to make adjustment. When finished, tighten bolts to 14 - 18 ft lb (19 - 25 Nm).
5. Disconnect SST or remove jumper wire. Check that timing is within a range of 6° - 18° BTDC.
