DOOR SIDE MOLDING DETACHES IN EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES

APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS

All 1993 - 95 626 model vehicles.

DESCRIPTION

The front or rear door side molding may detach from the door skin. This occurs primarily in cold climates (-20 degrees F). The concern is caused by inadequate adhesion of the molding to the door skin at low temperatures.

If a customer complains of this concern, replace the molding according to the instructions in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Front Doors

NOTE:
Door skin must be at least 60 degrees F.

1. Place the window in the full UP position.

2. Remove the inner door panel.

CAUTION:
Refer to the instructions in Service Bulletin S, 028/94 or the revised pages of the workshop manual to avoid damage to the vehicle door trim.

3. Carefully remove:

^ Bottom half of plastic door screen (carefully peel back to remove and re-use)

^ Door speaker

4. Remove the affected molding (if attached to door).

5. Apply alcohol to a clean cloth and remove adhesive residue along the door molding area.

6. Apply a small amount of black butyl from the door screen onto the open end of a 10 mm wrench.





7. Press a push-on retainer (speed nut) into the butyl to hold the retainer in place on the wrench. Refer to Fig. 1

NOTE:
The following steps require two (2) technicians.

8. Insert the open end of the wrench into the speaker opening under the front end of the side impact bar.

9. Line up the hole in the retainer with the locator hole in the door skin provided for the door side molding.

10. Instruct the second technician to:

^ Remove the adhesive backing from the new molding.

^ Align the front locator pin on the molding with the front locator hole in the door skin.





11. Hold the wrench firmly and apply pressure to the molding until the retainer is securely installed. Refer to Fig. 2.

NOTE:
The retainer must be installed tight against the door skin.

12. Install the remaining molding (locator pin to locator hole) from the front to the rear of the door (except rear (last) retainer.

13. Install the rear retainer as follows:

^ Hold a retainer with wrench and butyl as described in step 7.

^ Line up the hole in the retainer with the locator hole in the door skin provided for the door side molding.





^ Install the door's rear retainer by using the method described in step 11 and Fig 2 and 3.





14. Install the remaining retainers using a 10mm deep well socket. Refer to Fig. 4.

NOTE:
All retainers must be installed tight against the door skin.

15. Apply firm pressure to the molding to secure the adhesive to the door.

16. Carefully install:

^ Plastic door screen

^ Door speaker

^ Door Panel

17. Test all functions.

Rear Doors

NOTE:
Door skin must be at least 60 degrees F.

1. Place the window in the full UP position.

2. Remove the inner door panel.

3. Carefully peel back the bottom half of plastic door screen (to re-use).

4. Remove the affected molding (if attached to door).

5. Apply alcohol to a clean cloth and remove adhesive residue along the door molding area.

6. Remove the adhesive backing and install the molding,

NOTE:
Start at the front and work to the rear of the vehicle.

7. Install the remaining five (5) retainers onto the locator pins using a 10mm deep well socket. Refer to Fig. 4.

NOTE:
All retainers must be installed tight against the door skin.

8. Apply firm pressure to the molding to secure the adhesive to the door.

9. Carefully install:

^ Plastic door screen

^ Door Panel

10. Test all functions.
