DESCRIPTION
A squeaking noise may be heard from the front strut area while making turns. The noise may be caused by interference between:
^ the spring upper seat and the strut dust cover or
^ the dust cover and the rubber bump stopper.
NOTE:
This noise may be confused with steering rack squeak or strut bearing noise. Prior to removing the struts and/or replacing the strut bearings, verify the source of the noise using the procedures below.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
NOTE:
^ The tires or struts do not require removal to perform this procedure.
^ Perform the following procedure on BOTH left and right front struts.
1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
2. Slide the dust cover and rubber bump stopper to the bottom of the strut rod.
3. Lower the vehicle and road test.
^ If the noise is not present, proceed to step 1 of the Repair Procedure.
^ If the noise is still present, refer to the applicable workshop manual or NVH manual for troubleshooting and repair instructions.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
2. Apply grease to the following areas (Refer to Fig. 1):
^ Top of the dust cover.
^ Between the rubber bump stopper and the dust cover.
NOTE:
^ Before applying grease remove any rust or contamination from the interference area.
^ Do not use grease lubricants that may damage rubber. Use only commercially available silicone-based grease.
^ Spray lubricants that may wash off with road spray are not recommended.
3. Slide the dust-cover and rubber bump stopper to the top of the strut rod.
4. Lower the vehicle and road test to confirm repair.
