All 1993 - 626/MX-6 vehicles
1994 - 626 vehicles with a VIN of 1YVGE22D3R5180482 or less.
1994 - MX-6 vehicles with a VIN of 1YVGE31C3R5180789 or less.

DESCRIPTION*

Excessive backlash in the steering gear assembly can cause a clunking noise while turning the vehicle.

If a customer complains of this noise, repair according to the information below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE*

To correct this problem, the backlash must be reset. Follow the instructions on page N -17, "Adjusting Cover", steps 1 through 8 of the applicable workshop manual.

NOTE:
When performing step 3, the adjusting cover should be backed off 20 degrees instead of 45 degrees as listed in the manual. Pinion preload should be 1.0 - 1.3 Nm (10 - 14 Kg-cm, 8.7 - 12.1 in-lbs) max. Pull scale reading 7.8 N (0.81 Kg, 1.8 lbs) max.
