Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Description and Operation

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR)
Description
This system recirculates a small amount of exhaust gas into the intake manifold to reduce the combustion temperature, and reduce NOx emissions.

This system consists of the EGR control valve, EGR function sensor, two solenoid valves, the Powertrain Control Module Engine (PCME) and input devices.

Operation / Cold Engine
Engine coolant temperature: below 45°C (113°F).

EGR operation is stopped to improve driveablity when the engine is cold.

Operation / Warm Engine
The PCME controls the solenoid valves (vacuum side and vent side) to supply EGR gases as described in figure.
