Air Induction System
PURPOSETo provide a metered air supply to the engine as part of the air/fuel charge which feeds the combustion chambers. Additionally, the air intake system provides the control of engine speed based on inputs from either the vehicle operator via the accelerator linkage and/or the powertrain control module engine (PCME) via the idle speed control system.
CONSTRUCTION
The air induction system consists of an accelerator pedal/linkage system, a throttle body assembly, idle speed control system, variable inertia charging system (VICS), intake manifold assembly, and air cleaner assembly.
OPERATION
Air enters the throttle body and is distributed to each cylinder through the intake manifold. The air flow is controlled by the VICS shutter valve inside the intake manifold and the throttle valve which is connected to the accelerator pedal linkage. Idle speed is determined by position of the throttle valve and the operation of the by-pass air control valve assembly.
