Subject:
REAR DEFROSTER DOES NOT OPERATE

AFFECTED MODELS
1994 - 96 MX-3 with a VIN of JM1EC43**T0502358 and lower.

NOTE:
1996 MX-3 is applicable to markets other than the U.S.

DESCRIPTION

The rear defroster may not operate and the relay and/or connector may be damaged. The damage is caused by vibration at the connector and relay while driving. The vibration increases contact resistance and generates heat in the connector. In some cases, rear defroster relay replacement alone may not prevent the concern from recurring.

The rear defroster relay location has changed to reduce vibration. Refer to Fig. 1.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary repaired according to this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Check relay "A" and connector for damage.

^ If no damage is found, refer to section I of the BETM. Repair as necessary and proceed to step 2.

^ If the relay and/or connector is damaged, replace the relay with a new part and, if necessary, repair the connector.

2. Disconnect connector "C" from relay "C".

3. Connect connector "C" to newly installed relay "A."

4. Connect connector "A" to relay "C."

NOTE:
Connector "A" must be connected to relay "C." These relays share functional characteristics. Switching the "A" and "C" connectors will not affect the function of the related system.
