With Scan Tool

On-Board Diagnosis System:

When troubles occur in the main input or output devices, check for the cause with Mazda service tools or aftermarket equivalents. Failures of each device are indicated and retrieved from the PCME as diagnostic trouble code numbers.

For input devices, the PCME continuously checks for malfunctions. For output devices, it checks for malfunctions only in a 3 second period after the ignition is turned ON or when the data link connector TEN terminal is grounded.

INSPECTION

Fig. 159 SST Connector:

1. Connect SST to data link connector and a ground.
2. Set select switch to position A.
3. Set System Selector to position 1 and Self Test.
4. Turn ignition switch ON.
5. Verify that digital display flashes 88 and buzzer sounds for 3 seconds after switching ignition ON.
6. If 88 does not flash, check main relay, power supply circuit and data link connector wiring.
7. If 88 flashes and buzzer sounds continuously for over 20 seconds, check for a short between PCME terminal 1E and data link connector. Replace PCME if necessary and repeat test.
8. Note any code numbers and check for causes by referring to Trouble Code Charts.
9. To cancel trouble code memory after testing and repair, perform after-repair procedure.

AFTER-REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect negative battery cable and depress brake pedal for at least 20 seconds. Reconnect battery.
2. Connect Mazda tools or equivalent aftermarket tools as previously described.
3. Turn ignition ON but do not start engine for six seconds.
4. Start and warm up engine. Run at 2000 rpm for three minutes.
5. Verify no codes displayed.
