Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Power Connector Terminal:
NOTE: Some timing lights do not light at Nos. 2 and 4 cylinders even if the ignition system is okay.
1. Check engine condition (spark plugs, leaks in vacuum hoses, etc).
2. Verify that all accessories are OFF.
3. Warm engine to operating temperature.
NOTE: When using an externally powered timing light and/or tachometer, connect it to the power connector (Blue: 1-pin).
WARNING: Do not ground the power connector terminal. Some fuses will be burned.
4. Connect timing light and tachometer to data link connector terminal IG-.
Ignition Timing Adjustment:
5. Connect Mazda SST and set TEST SW to "SELF TEST" or connect data link connector terminals TEN and GND with a jumper wire.
6. Check idle speed. If needed, adjust to 800 - 900 rpm (MTX), 750 - 850 rpm (ATX).
7. Verify that timing mark (white) on crank pulley aligns with indicator pin: 9° - 11° BTDC at idle.
8. If marks are not aligned, remove ignition coil bracket and push coil aside for easy access. Loosen crankshaft position sensor lock bolts and turn sensor to make adjustment.
9. After adjustment, tighten sensor lock bolts to 14 - 19 ft lb (19 - 25 Nm).
10. Remove jumper wire or SST from data link connector.
11. Increase engine speed and verify that ignition timing advances.
