POWER ANTENNA RELAY INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1990 - 97 Miata

DESCRIPTION

Power antenna relay repair parts are now available or resolving customer concerns in this area.

Prior to replacing the power antenna unit, inspect the relay according to the attached procedure. If the power antenna is identified as the source of the concern, replace only the relay.

CAUTION:
Depending on the build date of the vehicle, parts interchangeability will vary. If the wrong replacement part is installed, the following symptoms and/or malfunctions may occur. Refer to the table for applicable parts.

^ Replacement parts for the 1996 - 97 Miata can be used to correct concerns with the 1990 - 95 Miata; however, the antenna may momentarily go down during engine cranking. This symptom usually occurs in the 1996 - 97 Miata.

^ If replacement parts for the 1990 - 95 Miata are used in the 1996 - 97 Miata, the power antenna will not operate.

^ If replacement antenna relay parts are not available at the time of repair, older assemblies (0000-81-9300) can utilize the newer relay (N007-66-A3Y).

NOTE:
The parts information in this bulletin supersedes Accessory Bulletin XS-1 parts information

^ If the terminals are damaged, repair as necessary and retest.

If the terminals are not damaged, proceed to step 3.

3. Disconnect the power antenna relay connector.

4. Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of the female connector (pin-9).

^ If the power antenna operates smoothly, proceed to step 7. If the antenna does not operate smoothly, proceed to step 6.

6. Inspect the following and repair as necessary. If no problem(s) is found, replace the power antenna relay.

^ Check the antenna fuse.

^ Check the wiring harness between the antenna fuse and the power antenna relay (terminal B in the 9-pin connector) for an open circuit or short to ground.

^ Check the wiring harness between the body ground and the power antenna relay (terminal F in the 9-pin connector) for an open circuit.

7. Confirm that the power antenna relay connector is disconnected.

8. Turn the ignition ON.

9. Turn the audio unit ON.

10. Verify that voltage +B is applied to terminal A in the power antenna relay connector (female side, 9-pin connector).

^ If applied, replace the power antenna relay.

^ If no voltage is applied, proceed to step 11.

11. Check for an open circuit or short to ground in the wiring harness between the audio unit (terminal D in the 12-pin connector) and the power antenna relay (terminal A of the 9-pin connector)

^ If an open circuit or short to ground exists, repair and retest the antenna operation. If no problems are found, replace the audio unit.
