Subject:
SOFT CONVERTIBLE TOP ZIPPER REPLACEMENT
APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
All MX-5 Miata model vehicles with soft convertible tops.
DESCRIPTION
Broken or torn zippers in soft convertible tops should be replaced by a professional upholsterer using only Mazda genuine parts. Failure to use Mazda parts will result in rejection of warranty claim should the replacement tail.
Dealers should not perform this repair by replacing the complete soft convertible top or rear window.
Provide a copy of this bulletin to the professional upholsterer performing the repair.
NOTE:
Before unzipping the rear window, unlatch the soft top. This releases the tension of the zipper and eases zipping and unzipping.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The following tips will be helpful when replacing the zipper in a soft top.
NOTE:
Do Not attempt to replace half of a zipper.
1. Unlatch the soft top and remove the set plate from the header bow.
2. Remove rear package shelf trim and set plates.
3. Remove belt line trim covers and end protectors.
4. Remove rain rail from stud locators.
5. Disconnect stretch cables.
6. Remove three flaps holding top bows in place.
NOTE:
Each flap is wrapped around the bow and then tucked into a slot. Use a covered screwdriver end to hold this slot open slightly while removing the material. The rear flap is held in place with velcro. If the material on the flaps separates during removal, rebond prior to installation.
7. Remove the soft top and window curtain and lay flat on clean surface.
8. Mark the positions of the old zipper on both top and rear window curtain.
9. Remove zipper and sew a new zipper into place.
NOTE:
The new zipper must be sewn into the flap behind the rear bow in exactly the same place as the old zipper.
Make sure zipper is on the right side of the window when closed.
Original velcro pad should be in place below edge of zipper on both sides of rear window. If the bonding on the pads is loose, it must be sewn back into position, Do Not glue these pads in place.
