The "Repair Information" portion of this bulletin has changed. Replace the original bulletin with this revised copy.
APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
MX-5 Miata vehicles with a VIN of JM1NA35**V0719633 and lower.
DESCRIPTION
Washer fluid residue in the washer line may escape from the nozzle and run down the hood. This concern is most noticeable in warm temperatures when the engine compartment is warm also. The leakage is caused by thermal expansion of air trapped in the washer line. To prevent this concern, a one-way check valve has been added to the washer line.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, repaired according to this bulletin.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Determine which hose configuration is installed on the vehicle. Refer to Fig. 2.
^ If Type "A" proceed to Procedure 1.
^ If Type "B" proceed to Procedure 2.
PROCEDURE 1 (Type "A")
1. Check the vehicle's VIN.
^ If the VIN is JM1NA355**R0521312 and lower, the check valve is already installed. Proceed to steps 3 - 8.
^ If the VIN is higher than JM1NA35**R0521312 but below JM1NA35**V0719634, replace joint pipe "A" with a check valve. Proceed to steps 2 - 8.
2. Install check valve at joint "A." refer to Fig. 3.
NOTE:
Install the check valve so that the check ball faces the pump. If the valve is installed in the wrong direction, the washer fluid will not flow from the nozzle.
3. Cut 560 mm from the service part (vinyl tube).
4. Remove pipe "B" and install 560 mm tube. Refer to Fig. 4.
5. Cut 40 mm out of the service part (vinyl tube)
6. Install the 40 mm tube onto the "Y" connection. Refer to Fig. 4.
7. Install check valve onto the 40 mm tube.
8. Connect all lines and verify operation and that no leaks exist at the connections.
PROCEDURE 2 (TYPE B)
1. Replace both joint pipes with check valves. Refer to Fig. 5.
NOTE:
Install the check valve so that the check ball faces the pump. If the valve is installed in the wrong direction, the washer fluid will not flow from the nozzle.
2. Connect all lines and verify operation and that no leaks exist at the connections.
