Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Deactivate audio anti-theft function as outlined under Technician Safety Information, before disconnecting battery.
2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain engine coolant, then remove hood.
4. Remove splash shield, fresh air duct, mass airflow sensor connector, intake air temperature sensor connector, air cleaner housing and resonance chamber No. 2.
5. Remove accelerator cable, then the radiator, water, heater, fuel, brake vacuum and purge vacuum hoses.
6. Remove harness connectors.
7. Remove timing belt as outlined in Timing Belt, Replace.
8. Remove distributor as outlined in Powertrain Management/Ignition System.
9. Remove camshaft as outlined in Powertrain Management/Camshaft.
10. Loosen cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in order, Fig. 5, then remove bolts and head.

11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replace any cylinder head bolt that exceeds 4.154 inches in length.
b. Apply clean engine oil to cylinder head bolts and head seat, then torque to 17.2 - 22.0 Nm (12.7 - 16.2 ft.lbs) in sequence shown in Fig. 6.

c. Paint mark on each bolt, then using mark as reference, tighten each bolt 85 - 95° in order shown, then tighten each bolt another 85 - 95°.
d. Reactivate audio anti-theft function as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
