Assembly

Reverse Engine Disassemble procedure to assemble, noting the following:
1. Assemble piston and connecting rod with identification marks facing upward.
2. Install piston rings as follows:
a. Install oil ring spacer with ends upward, then upper and lower rails. Ensure rails turn smoothly in both directions.
b. Install rings to piston. Rings must be installed with "R" marks upward. Second ring must be installed with scraper face downward.

3. Pistons must be installed with "F" marks facing front of engine.

4. Position ring end gaps as shown in Fig. 53.

5. Install main bearing caps according to cap number and arrow mark. Tighten main bearing cap bolts in three steps to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 54.
6. Install connecting rod caps with matching marks aligned. Tighten connecting rod cap nuts to specifications in three steps.
7. Install main bearing support plate as follows:

a. Apply silicone sealant to block as shown in Fig. 55.
b. Apply a continuous bead on main bearing support plate, then install support plate. Tighten support plate in three steps to specifications.
c. Oil pan must be installed within 30 minutes after sealant is applied to support plate.

8. Install valve spring with narrow pitch end toward cylinder head, Fig. 56.
9. Install and tighten cylinder head bolts as outlined under Cylinder Head, Replace.
10. Install thermostat with jiggle pin facing upward. Printed side of gasket must face thermostat.

11. Apply silicone sealant to points shown in Fig. 58. Keep camshaft journal surfaces free of any sealant.

12. Tighten camshaft cap bolts in three steps in sequence shown in Figs. 20, 59 and 60 to specifications.
13. Install timing belt and related components as outlined under Timing Belt, Replace.
