Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

Ignition System Diagram:

PURPOSE
Igniter is a PCME controlled a switching device that activates the primary ignition coil circuit.

LOCATION
Near coil on left side of engine compartment.

OPERATION
The PCME determines optimum ignition timing from various inputs and transmits a primary current OFF signal to the igniter to control ignition timing. The PCME calculates input from these devices to control ignition timing: ignition switch (START position), park/neutral switch (ATX), clutch and neutral switches (MTX), throttle position sensor, air flow sensor, engine coolant temperature sensor, crankshaft position sensor, and data link connector (TEN terminal for base timing adjustment).
