Removal/Installation

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine coolant.
3. On 1995 - 96 Protege models, remove air cleaner, front pipe and exhaust manifold.

4. Remove cylinder head assembly in numbered sequence, Figs. 13 through 16, noting the following:
a. Remove timing belt as outlined under Timing Belt.






Camshaft pulley Removal Note
1. Temporarily install the No.3 engine mount bracket to support the engine.
2. Remove the SST (Support, engine).

3. Hold the camshaft by using a wrench on the cast hexagon as shown, and loosen the camshaft pulley lock bolt.
4. Remove the camshaft pulley.

b. On models with 1.5L engine, loosen camshaft cap bolts in five or six steps in numbered sequence shown, Fig. 17.

1. Rotate the camshaft clockwise so that cams do not pressing on the HLAs.
2. Loosen the camshaft cap bolts in five or six steps in the order shown.
3. Remove the camshafts.
4. Remove the camshaft oil seals.

c. Loosen cylinder head bolts in three steps in sequence shown in Figs. 18 and 19.

5. Install cylinder head assembly reversing numbered sequence.






Cylinder head bolt Installation Note
1. Before installation, measure the length of each bolt. Replace any that exceed the maximum length.
Length: 99.2-99.8 mm {3.91-3.92 in}
Maximum: 100.5 mm {3.957 in}






2. Put a paint mark on each bolt head.
3. Using the marks as a reference, tighten the bolts by turning each 85°-95°in the sequence shown.
4. Further tighten each bolt by turning another 85°-95° in the sequence shown.

b. On models with 1.5L engine, torque cylinder head bolts in two or three steps to 12.7 - 16.2 ft.lb. in sequence shown in Fig. 21, then further torque each bolt 85° - 95° in sequence. Finally, torque each bolt in sequence with an additional 85° - 95° rotation.

c. On models with 1.5L and 1.8L/4 engines, torque cylinder head bolts in three steps in sequence shown in Figs. 22 to 56 - 60 ft.lb.

Camshaft
a. Before installation, insert the chain adjuster between camshafts.
b. Install the camshafts onto the cylinder head, aligning marks on the camshaft gear and the timing chain.

Camshaft Installation Note
1. Install the camshafts.
2. Apply silicone sealant to the shaded areas shown.
Thickness: 1mm {0.04 in}
3. Install the camshaft caps to the positions from which they were removed.

Camshaft Cap
a. On models with 1.5L engine, tighten camshaft cap bolts to specifications in numbered sequence shown, Fig. 20.
b. Hand tighten the camshaft cap bolts marked (5) (7) (2) and (4)






1.8 L

c. On models with 1.5/1.8 L engine, tighten camshaft cap bolts to specifications in numbered sequence shown,
d. Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in five or six steps.
Tightening torque: 11.3-14.2 N.m {115-145 kgf.cm , 99.9-125 in.lbf}
3. Apply clean engine oil to the lip of the new camshaft oil seal.
4. Push the oil seal slightly in by hand.

^ Oil seal outer diameter: 48.0 mm { 1.89 in}
^ Oil seal inner diameter: 34.2 mm {1.35 in}
5. Tap the oil seal in evenly by using a pipe and a hammer.






Camshaft pulley
1. Align the "Z" mark with the camshaft knock pin and install the camshaft pulley.






1.8 L

1. Face the pin on each camshaft straight up.
2. Install the camshaft pulleys so that "I"mark (intake side) and "E" mark (exhaust side) face straight up.

2. Hold the camshaft by using a wrench on the cast hexagon, and tighten the lock bolt.
Tightening torque: 5.O - O N.m {5.O - 6.2 kgf.m, 37-44 ft.lbf}
