General System Operation
The Powertrain Control System consists of various sensors, switches, and a Powertrain Control Module Engine (PCME). The sensors and switches act as inputs to the Control Module.

The sensors and switches (inputs) send the Control Module data concerning engine operating conditions. The Control Module interprets this data in order to control various output devices. The output devices control air intake amounts, the amount of fuel injection, fuel injection timing, evaporative emissions, idle-up, deceleration, ignition timing, etc. The Control Module has varying amounts of control over these (outputs).

By controlling these outputs, the Control Module can meet the different operational and driveability needs of the engine as it experiences different operating conditions and requirements.
