Neutral Safety Switch: Description and Operation

Inhibitor Switch:

Purpose
Signals PCME as to transmission operating range and prevents starting except in "P" or "N" positions. PCME uses input in its control calculations for fuel system, ignition system, turbocharger control system, air injection, and A/C.

Operation
Switch moves in conjunction with shift lever in vehicle. Gear position is read according to varying continuity between switch contacts.
