APPLICABLE MODELS/VINS
1996 Miata with a VIN of JM1NA****T0717875 and lower.
DESCRIPTION
The data link connector bracket for OBD-II may be broken. This condition causes the connector to hang down below the center lower panel. The cause of the concern is residue oil used in bracket production causing solvent cracks.
To correct this condition, the bracket is degreased prior to installation. Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary repaired according to this bulletin.
REPAIR PROCEDURES
1. Remove the lower center panel.
2. Remove the data link connector from the bracket.
^ Remove two (2) plastic fasteners.
^ Remove the broken plastic tabs from the bracket screws.
3. Position bracket at the new installation location. Refer to Fig. 2
^ Hold the bracket in its original position. Move the bracket to the left so that the left mounting hole is aligned with the panel installation hole.
^ Remove a portion of the foam area on the center panel around the bracket installation point. Refer to Fig. 2a
NOTE:
This procedure may not be necessary on all vehicles.
^ Use the bracket as a template to mark the new location for the bracket right mounting hole.
^ Drill a 6 mm hole in the lower center panel. Refer to Fig. 2.
4. Use a suitable tool and remove 3mm from the area (round edge only) of the bracket shown in Fig. 3.
5. Install the spring nuts into the bracket. Refer to Fig. 4.
NOTE:
To ensure a tight fit, lightly pinch the spring nuts with pliers prior to installation.
6. Install lower center panel.

NOTE:
Ensure direction of data link connector for easy access to NGS tester.
