INTERMITTENT 4-3 DOWNSHIFT OR SHIFTS IN AND OUT OF OVERDRIVE

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
All 1996-97 626/MX-6 four cylinder with automatic transmission.

DESCRIPTION

An intermittent 4-3 downshift or a shift in and out of O/D at steady speeds may be the result of a short in the RAN wire in the wiring harness that runs between PCM pin # 59 and cruise control module pin G. This short may be caused by the wiring harness chafing against the A/C pipe at the right engine mount area.

Customers complaining of this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer complaint.

2. Install the SST Breakout Box and drive at a steady highway speed, Check for voltage fluctuation at pin # 59 (should be battery voltage). Any voltage fluctuation may indicate damage to the R/W wire.

Note
^ If no fluctuation in voltage readings is seen at pin # 59 when this problem occurs, the concern may be caused by an improper signal from the transaxle range sensor. Refer to the Workshop Manual section K for further diagnostics.

3. Inspect the R/W wire at the A/C line location for damage to wire insulation

4. If wire is damaged, repair as necessary.

5. Reposition the repaired harness to prevent chafing against the A/C line or right engine mount bracket and secure with tiewraps.

6. Clear any DTCs.

7. Verify repair.
