A. VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE1. Verify the vehicle is within both of the following ranges:
^ JMBA14**SO 100002 - 181242
^ JMBB14**TO 300006 - 302872
- If vehicle is within the above range, proceed to STEP 2.
- If vehicle is not within the above range, return it to the customer or inventory.
2. Perform a Vehicle Status Inquiry using your MDCS System and inspect vehicle for an Authorized Modification Label RECALL # 91007 attached to the drivers side door. Refer to illustration shown.
Note
^ Be sure to verify recall number as the vehicle may have multiple recalls.
- If MDCS displays RECALL: 91007 N and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, the recall has not been performed. Proceed to B. SWITCH INSPECTION PROCEDURE.
- If MDCS displays RECALL: 91007 N and an Authorized Modification Label is present, contact the Warranty Department. They will update the vehicle history.
- If MDCS displays RECALL: 91007 D and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, proceed to D. AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION.
- If MDCS displays RECALL: 91007 D and an Authorization Modification Label is present, the recall has already been completed. Return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.
^ - If MDCS does not display RECALL: 91007 N or RECALL: 91007 D, this recall does not apply to the vehicle. Return vehicle to the customer or inventory.
B. SWITCH INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Remove the upper column cover.
2. Locate the lot number stamped on the combination switch (see the illustration shown) and determine its production date using the following information:
^ 1st Digit
- disregard; can be any number or letter
^ 2nd Digit = day (A-Z, a, b, c, d, e)
- A-Z = days 1-26
- a = day 27, b = day 28, c = day 29, d = day 30, e = day 31
^ 3rd Digit = year (0-9)
^ 4th Digit = month
- 1-9 = January - September
- 0 = October, N = November, D = December
EXAMPLE: Lot Number 8V50 means Oct. 22, 1995
- If the production date an the combination switch is on or after July 11, 1995 (lot # *K57), it is not necessary to replace the switch. Install the upper column cover and proceed to "D. CAMPAIGN LABEL INSTALLATION."
- If the production date on the combination switch is before July 11, 1995, proceed to C. SWITCH REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE."
- If the production date on the combination switch is not legible, proceed to C. SWITCH REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE."
C. SWITCH REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
Warning
This procedure requires the removal and installation of the air bag module. Be sure to observe all "Service Warnings" in the Workshop Manual (section T DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION) when handling air bag modules.
1. Begin removing the headlight switch by recording all preset audio stations.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Center the steering wheel.
4. Remove the following items. Refer to the Workshop Manual (section T DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION and COMBINATION SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
^ Air Bag Module
^ Steering Wheel
^ Lower Column Cover
5. Attach tape to the clock spring to prevent movement as shown.
Caution
^ Be sure to attach tape to the clock spring to prevent component damage.
6. Remove the three (3) screws as shown above and pinch the two (2) claws together to remove the clock spring. Refer to the illustration shown.
7. Remove the two (2) screws holding the headlight switch to the combination switch body as shown.
Note
^ Be sure to hold the cover down with your fingers while removing the headlight switch screws. A ball bearing and spring are located under the cover. These items must be reused.
8. Remove the following as shown below:
^ Cord Cover
^ Three (3) Tie-Wraps
^ Vinyl Tape
^ Sponge
9. Disconnect the headlight switch harness from the blue 14-pin connector by using the following procedure. Refer to the illustration.
A. Use a small screwdriver (or equivalent), lift the locking bar at the top of the connector.
B. Remove the black, green, and red wire terminals from the connector by lifting the tab with a suitable tool and slide out terminals. Refer to illustration.
Caution
Be careful not to break locks while removing terminals.
10. Begin installing replacement headlight switch by applying a small amount of grease (provided in kit) to the following components. Refer to the illustration shown.
^ End of new headlight switch lever
^ Spring
^ Check ball
11. Assemble the spring and ball bearing onto replacement switch.
12. Install headlight switch assembly onto the combination switch body with original cover and two (2) screws.
13. Verify that the new switch operates smoothly and does not bind.
Note
^ Be sure to install check ball and spring.
14. Route the replacement headlight harness in the same position as the original harness (see STEP 8).
15. At the left side of the combination switch assembly, align the white mark on headlight switch harness with the corner of combination switch as shown.
16. Secure the harness at the white mark to the other two existing harnesses using the shortest tie-wrap provided in kit.
Caution
^ The white mark must be in alignment with the corner of the combination switch.
17. Install the following items in the following order;
^ Two (2) Longest Tie-Wraps (provided in kit)
^ Vinyl Tape
^ Cord Cover
18. Verify that the new switch operates smoothly and does not bind.
19. Insert the headlight harness black, green, and red wire terminals into their correct locations in the blue 14-pin connector and depress locking bar.
20. Apply new sponge in the same location where the original was removed.
21. Install the remaining items. Refer to the Workshop Manual (section T DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION and COMBINATION SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION) and remove the following:
^ Combination Switch
^ Upper & Lower Column Covers
^ Steering Wheel
^ Air Bag Module
Caution
^ When installing the column covers, be sure the wire harness is not pinched between the top and bottom halves.
22. Connect the negative battery cable.
23. Reset clock and radio stations.
24. Check operation of the combination switch and warning light.
D. AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION
Complete an "Authorized Modification Label" with the recall number # 91007 written on the sticker and affix it to driver's side door under the door latch. Refer back to the illustration under "A. VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE".
