RIGHT BANK CYLINDER HEAD, CYLINDER HEAD COVER AND TIMING BELT COVER MODIFICATIONS

APPLICABLE MODELS / VIN
1997 Millenia with KL engine with VIN beginning JM1TA22**V1307595 and higher.
1997 626 / MX-6 with KL engine with VIN beginning IYVGE**D*V5644610 and higher.

DESCRIPTION

A new style cylinder head, cylinder head cover and timing belt cover were introduced on the right side engine bank The new style parts improve productivity.

Because of this change, if part replacement is necessary, some parts may require modification prior to installation and some parts are not interchangeable at all.

PARTS REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

Cylinder Head Replacement

1. Inspect the cylinder head cover.





^ If the cylinder head cover is the new style (Fig. 2A), both new or old cylinder heads can be installed.

^ If the cylinder head cover is the old style (Fig. 2B) and the old style cylinder heads are not available, a new style head cover must also be installed.

Cylinder Head Cover Replacement

1. Inspect the cylinder head

^ If the cylinder head is the old style, either style cover may be used.

^ If the cylinder head is the new style, a new style cover must be used. See Fig 1.

Timing Belt Cover (Right Side)

If the old style timing belt cover is installed on a new style cylinder head, perform the following:

1. Remove any residue from cylinder head.

2. Seal the notched area (Fig. i) on the camshaft cap with silicone sealer (RTV) to prevent water entry.

If a new style timing belt cover is installed on an old style cylinder head:





1. Remove the raised area on the inside of the rubber tab that would fit into the notch (Refer to Fig 1) on the new style head. See Fig. 3.
