Band Servo
PREINSPECTION BAND SERVO OPERATION
1. Check the band servo operation by applying compressed air as shown. Air pressure of 390 kPa (57 psi) maximum.
2. If not, the D-rings or the O-rings may be damaged or the piston assembly may be sticking. Inspect and replace as necessary when assembling.
DISASSEMBLY / INSPECTION / ASSEMBLY
1. Disassemble as shown in the illustration, referring to Disassembly Note.
2. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.
Disassembly Note
Snap Ring (4)
1. Install the Special Service Tool (SST) in the band servo assembly as shown.
2. Compress the 4GR band servo piston retainer.
3. Remove the snap ring.
4. Remove the SST and remove the band servo assembly.
Retaining Ring (8)
1. Compress the 4GR band servo piston assembly by using a vise.
2. Remove the retaining ring.
Inspection
Brake Band (3)
CAUTION: Hold the brake band as shown in the figure.
Replace the brake band if damaged or malfunctioning.
Spring (11, 12, 19, 24, 25)
1. Measure the spring free length.
2. If not within the specifications, replace the spring.
Assembly Procedure
1. Install the 2nd band servo piston retainer and the 2nd band servo piston.
a. Apply ATF to a new D-ring and install it onto the 2nd band servo piston. D-ring inner diameter for the small D-ring is 35.6 mm (1.402 inch) and the large D-ring is 62.5 mm (2.461 inch).
b. Apply ATF to a new O-rings and install them onto the 2nd band servo piston retainer. O-ring inner diameter of the small O-ring is 72.9 mm (2.870 inch) and the large O-ring is 75.8 mm (2.984 inch).
c. Install the piston stem, thrust washer, return spring arid spring retainer.
d. Install the retaining ring.
e. Install the 2nd band servo piston into the 2nd servo piston retainer by pushing evenly around the circumference, being careful not to damage the D-rings.
2. Install the 4GR band servo piston retainer and the 4GR band servo piston.
a. Apply ATF to a new D-ring and install it onto the 4GR band servo retainer. D-ring inner diameter is 43.3 mm (1.705 inch).
b. Apply ATF to a new O-rings and install them onto the 4GR band servo retainer. O-ring inner diameter for the small O-ring is 76.9 mm (3.028 inch) and the large O-ring is 77.9 mm (3.067 inch).
c. Install the spring retainer, spring C and spring D in the 4GR band servo piston.
d. Compress the 4GR band servo piston assembly by using a vise.
e. Install the retaining ring.
f. Install the 4GR band servo piston assembly by pushing evenly around the circumference, being careful not to damage the D-ring.
3. Install the band servo assembly in the transaxle case.
a. Install the spring A,B and band servo assembly in the transaxle case.
b. Install the SST.
c. Install the snap ring.
4. Check the band servo piston operation by applying compressed air through the fluid passages as shown in the figure. Air pressure of 390 kPa (57 psi) maximum.
