Camshaft
NOTE: The 1.5 Protege engine is a dual overhead cam engine despite it's outward appearance. Once the cam cover (valve cover) is removed both camshafts and their drive system can be observed. The right camshaft is driven by the timing belt and a sprocket bolted to the shaft. The left camshaft is driven by a chain and sprockets connected to the right camshaft.
When making repairs to engine timing components or the cylinder head it is adviseable to inspect and adjust this drive chain or make any repairs needed.
1. Before installation, insert the chain adjuster between camshafts.
2. Install the camshafts onto the cylinder head, aligning marks on the camshaft gear and the timing chain.
CAUTION: Because there is little camshaft thrust clearance, the camshaft must be held horizontally while it is installed. Otherwise, excessive force will be applied to the thrust area, causing burr on the thrust receiving area of the cylinder head journal. To avoid this, the following procedure must be observed.
3. Apply silicone sealant to the shaded areas shown. Keep the camshaft sliding surface free of sealant to prevent engine damage.
- Bead thickness 1 mm (0.04 inch).
4. Apply engine oil to the camshaft and cylinder head journals.
5. Install the camshaft caps to the positions from which they were removed.
6. Tighten the camshaft cap bolts in five or six steps in the order shown to achieve a final torque of 11.3-14.2 Nm (100-125 in. lbs.).
7. Verify that the camshaft settles horizontally when two bearing cap bolts at No.3 journal are tightened.
8. Apply clean engine oil to the lip of the new camshaft oil seal.
9. Push the oil seal slightly in by hand.
10. Tap the oil seal in evenly by using a pipe and a hammer.
NOTE:
- Oil seal outer diameter: 48.0 mm (1.89 inch)
- Oil seal inner diameter: 34.2 mm (1.35 inch)
