NOISE FROM FRONT BRAKE CALIPER WHEN BRAKING SLIGHTLY

NOTE:
This bulletin supersedes Service Bulletin Cat. P, 003/93.

APPLICABLE MODELS
1990 - 97 Protege with a VIN of JM1B*****V0100040 and lower.
1992 - 95 MX-3 with a VIN of JM1EC43**T0503176 and lower.

DESCRIPTION

An unusual noise may be heard from the front caliper while braking slightly. This noise may be caused by the main sleeve. To reduce noise, the main sleeve is now chrome plated instead of zinc plated. In addition, the guide plate configuration will be changed.

Customers complaining of this noise should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, have the following repairs performed according to this bulletin.

1) Replace the main sleeve with a modified part.

2) Adjust the guide plate according to the instructions below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.

NOTE:
Does not require brake hose and disc pads removal.

2. Remove both upper and lower side guide plates from the steering knuckle.





3. Bend the guide plate claws so that the distance between the claws is 10.8 mm.

4 Replace the main sleeve.

NOTE:
Apply grease to the outside of the main sleeve and inside of rubber boots.

5. Clean the knuckle installation surface and install guide plates and caliper.

6. Tighten the sleeve bolt.

Tightening Torque: 49.0 - 58.8 Nm (5.0 - 6.0 kgfm, 36.3 - 43.5 ft.- lbs)

7. Repeat procedure on other side of vehicle.

8. Verify repair.
