HARD TO OPERATE TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER

DESCRIPTION

The shift lever movement may be stiff when moving through all gear ranges. This concern is due to liquid residue on the shift indicator panel or rust accumulation on the shift lever pivot. To reduce this concern, the shift lock lever and spindle have been nickel plated and the amount of grease applied to the serrated area of the spindle increased.

Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary repaired according to this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify concern.

2. Remove the arm rest and front console.

3. Remove the four (4) indicator panel screws.





4. Inspect the area for residue. Fig. 1

^ If residue is found, remove the residue, install the indicator panel and recheck shift movement.

- If the concern is corrected, install removed components and return the vehicle to the customer.

- If the concern is still present, proceed to step 5.

5. Remove the shift lever assembly according to the instructions in section K or 05 of the workshop manual.





6. Inspect the bottom plastic portion of the shift lever for cracks. Fig. 2

^ If cracks are present, replace the shift lever assembly.

^ If cracks are not present, proceed to step 7.





7. Replace the following: (Refer to Fig. 3 for installation location)

^ Spindle
^ Shift Lock Lever
^ Push Nut

NOTE:
Remove any rust accumulated around the spindle installation area and apply white lithium grease to the spindle prior to installation.





8. Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol and apply silicone sealer (Loctite 66BR or equivalent) to the exterior components where indicated. Fig. 4

9. Install the shift lever assembly according to the instructions in section K or 05 of the workshop manual.

10. Verify repair.
