R001/98CLUNK NOISE FROM REAR SUSPENSION
WHILE TURNING OVER A BUMP
APPLICABLE MODELS
1997 Protege with VINs lower than JM1 BC141* V0 186598
DESCRIPTION
A clunk noise may be heard from the rear suspension while the vehicle is turning over a bump. This noise is the result of the rear damper being fully extended and causing the rubber stopper inside the damper to hit the end of the damper housing. This hitting motion is a design function of the damper and will not cause any damage. A modified damper with a modified stopper is available to reduce, not completely eliminate, this noise.
Customers complaining of this subject should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, use the following repair procedure.
NOTE:
Be sure to clearly communicate to the customer that the modified parts will reduce, not completely eliminate, this noise.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer complaint.
2. Replace both the left and right side dampers with modified parts per the Workshop Manual
3. Verify repair.
